Thermal Power Industry
1972
China has successfully developed its first domestically produced carbon brush for thermal power plants—D172—marking a key breakthrough in core performance. The product can stably meet the demanding requirement of a linear speed up to 50 m/s, filling a critical technology gap in carbon brushes for small-scale generator sets within China. Initially designed to complement 100,000 kW and 200,000 kW-class units, this innovative product lays a solid foundation for the early development of China's indigenous thermal power equipment.
1980
D172 material has undergone iterative upgrades. By optimizing the graphite matrix formulation and molding process, its current-carrying capacity and wear resistance have been significantly enhanced, enabling broader application scenarios—now extending to 30MW-class generating units. This milestone marks a crucial step forward for domestically produced thermal power carbon brushes, moving them from being "usable" to truly "highly reliable and efficient."

Benchmark against international standards to refine the technological system.
1993
To meet the demands of higher-power thermal power generating units, China has introduced the Morgan NCC634 carbon brush specifically designed for thermal power applications, originally developed in the UK. This product, renowned for its exceptional high-temperature stability and uniform current distribution, has been successfully integrated into mainstream thermal power units ranging from 300,000 kW to 600,000 kW. During operation, it has demonstrated remarkable characteristics such as extended service life, minimal wear, and reduced failure rates, providing an internationally advanced technical benchmark for the domestic industry. In this phase, through structural analysis of the imported product, performance testing, and the accumulation of application data, a solid technological foundation has been laid for the subsequent independent innovation of domestically produced carbon brushes.
Thermal Power Industry
2016-2017
Mega has initiated a deep technical collaboration with a renowned carbon technology company, focusing on addressing the critical "bottleneck" issue plaguing domestically produced high-end carbon brushes for thermal power plants. Together, they have jointly developed China's first specialized simulation test bench dedicated to thermal power plant carbon brushes. After three years of continuous R&D and multiple rounds of operational validation, the team successfully mastered the precision control technology for natural graphite materials, resulting in the launch of T3, a domestically produced carbon brush based on natural graphite. This groundbreaking product boasts remarkable advancements in core performance: its linear velocity compatibility has been boosted to 60 m/s, while its current-carrying density reaches up to 8 A/cm²—exceeding the levels of comparable international products. As a result, the project has effectively broken the long-standing reliance on imported high-end carbon brushes for thermal power applications.
2021
T3 carbon material has achieved a second-generation upgrade, introducing nano-scale reinforcing phases to optimize interfacial bonding strength. This enhancement further boosts its high-speed wear resistance, enabling the product to now support line speeds up to 80 m/s—making it the first domestically produced carbon brush capable of meeting the demanding requirements of ultra-high-speed thermal and power applications, thus paving the way for deployment in million-kilowatt-class generating units.
Thermal Power Industry
2023
T3 carbon brushes have been introduced to Shanghai Electric's specialized simulation test bench for on-machine feasibility verification. After passing rigorous simulated operating condition assessments, they were the first to complete installation, assembly, and trial runs on excitation equipment, marking a critical leap from the "laboratory" directly to the "engineering site."
2024
The T3 carbon brushes have officially been put into commercial operation in Shanghai Electric's 1000MW-class thermal power generating units. Operational data shows that their average wear rate is below 0.1mm per thousand hours, and the current distribution deviation is less than 5%. These performance metrics fully meet the stringent reliability requirements of large-scale power plants, marking the successful engineering implementation of domestically produced high-end carbon brushes for thermal power applications.
2025
T3 carbon brushes have entered the mass-delivery phase. Thanks to their stable performance and excellent cost-effectiveness, they now account for over 60% of domestically produced carbon brushes in China's thermal power market. This milestone marks the official transition of domestically made thermal power carbon brushes—from "replacing imports" to "dominating the market"—and provides a critical core component that supports China's efforts toward independent development of thermal power equipment.
